Madrid air crash stewardess survived by 'switching seats'
By Fiona Govan and Ed Owen in Madrid

*** begin quote ***
The sole crew member to survive last week's Madrid air crash has revealed how her life was spared by a last-minute decision to switch her seat from the back of the plane to the front.
*** end quote ***
Always listen to your "inner voice". I've heard it described as: "your conscience", the "Universe singing to us", "God speaking quietly directly to our soul", "intuition", "synchronicity", and "plain old luck".
Whatever!
An Old Nun said it was your Guardian Angel.
If it is "your conscience", the I love the dialogue in the movie "A Man For All Seasons" for instructions on following "your conscience":
*** begin quote ***
The Duke of Norfolk: Oh confound all this. I'm not a scholar, I don't know whether the marriage was lawful or not but dammit, Thomas, look at these names! Why can't you do as I did and come with us, for fellowship!
Sir Thomas More: And when we die, and you are sent to heaven for doing your conscience, and I am sent to hell for not doing mine, will you come with me, for fellowship?
*** end quote ***
Hope, that voice yells for me. I do tend to get engrossed in what I am doing at the time. No sensitive tap on the shoulder will do; I need a good swift kick in the A double Q!

Boys Honored As 911 Heroes
Published: August 5, 2008
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Two local boys received awards Tuesday for calling 911 in an emergency.
Shawn D. Parkes, 12, of Overland Park, was recognized by 9-1-1 for Kids®, an international emergency/disaster response educational organization. He called 911 when he saw a man at a Johnson County school beating a woman. Police said he stayed on the phone to make sure that officers knew exactly where to find them.
Dillon Huddleston, 10, of La Plata, Mo., called 911 when he saw his mother, who was 8 months pregnant, sick on the floor. Doctors later told her she would not have survived if her son hadn’t called for help.
Former Kansas City Chiefs players and even the police chief were on hand to recognize the young heroes.
[JR: May all your challenges be small enough for you to handle; yet, big enough to stretch you. Me? Tiny ones, please.]

JNEWS: Tramontano, William A. (MC1976) has become Brooklyn College’s new provost (again?)
http://www1.cuny.edu/forum/?p=2763
New Provost William Tramontano Takes Office
August 25th, 2008
***Begin Quote***
William A. Tramontano, a distinguished educator and researcher in the biological sciences, has become Brooklyn College’s new provost and vice-president for academic affairs, the College’s chief academic officer.
“Dr. Tramontano brings strong leadership to the College, a commitment to faculty growth and development, and a proven ability to initiate and implement new academic programs,” said President Christoph M. Kimmich as the provost assumed his post on Tuesday, July 1. “Brooklyn College welcomes Dr. Tramontano.”
A native of Bay Ridge, Tramontano comes to Brooklyn College from Lehman College, where he served as dean of natural and social sciences since 2003. He also served as the acting provost and vice-president for academic affairs during the 2006-07 academic year.
“I feel privileged to become part of the Brooklyn College community, and I look forward to serving all its members,” Tramontano said.
Tramontano holds a B.S. in biology from Manhattan College, an M.S. in biology from New York University, and a Ph.D. from New York University with a major in physiology. In 2002, he received the Distinguished LaSallian Educator Award from Manhattan College. Tramontano is currently serving the City University of New York on the Research Deans Committee and the Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation in Science (National Science Foundation).
“Coming from CUNY makes the transition easier because of the similarities of the institutions, the semi-centralized nature of CUNY, and my familiarity with the duties of the college provost,” Tramontano said.
He is a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Sigma Xi Honor Society, Botanical Society of America, Council for Undergraduate Research, and National Associations for the Advisors for the Health Professions. Tramontano taught at Manhattan College from 1981 to 2003. From 1988 to 2002, he served as chairperson of the Biology Department at Manhattan College/College of Mount Saint Vincent, where he also taught biology with the rank of full professor since 1991. He attended the Jesuit Brooklyn Preparatory High School, today the site of CUNY’s Medgar Evers College.
Under his leadership, Lehman College initiated three new academic programs: Master of Social Work, Master of Public Health, and Bachelor of Business Administration. He was also instrumental in the planning of a new science facility.
“Facilities are always an issue, as is getting the money for the capital improvements we will need at the College. So whether it’s the Roosevelt science project or the new theaters, those are the things I am going to play a role in,” he said.
“The intellectual tradition of Brooklyn College is recognized both near and far-it’s a fantastic institution. That said, what I know about the College is probably five percent of what I need to know.”

I received a postcard from Manhattan College signed by Ellen Kiernan, Director of Alumni Relations asking me to verify my data. Is this legit? Is it an attempt to sell us an alumni directory with an endorsement by the college? If it is I see it as an unethical and underhanded way to sell this “directory”.. If it is a sales pitch, let the publisher send it out to us as all the other fund raising items are sent or let them take out an ad in the news magazine we receive. I think it would be better received if it were done that way.

Washington archbishop rips Pelosi on abortion
By Bob Cusack
Posted: 08/25/08 11:29 PM [ET]
*** begin quote ***
In a rare public rebuke of a top politician, the archbishop of Washington said Monday that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) was incorrect when she recently said the moment of conception has long been a matter of controversy within the Catholic Church.
In a release issued Monday night, Washington Archbishop Donald W. Wuerl said Pelosi’s comments on “Meet the Press” on Sunday “were incorrect.”
Wuerl noted that Pelosi responded to a question on when life begins by mentioning she was Catholic.
The release quoted Pelosi as saying the church has not been able to come with a definition of when life begins.
“After Mr. Tom Brokaw, the interviewer, pointed out that the Catholic Church feels strongly that life begins at conception, she replied, ‘I understand. And this is, like, maybe 50 years or something like that. So again, over the history of the church, this is an issue of controversy,’ ” the release said.
Wuerl strongly disagrees.
He said, “We respect the right of elected officials such as Speaker Pelosi to address matters of public policy that are before them, but the interpretation of Catholic faith has rightfully been entrusted to the Catholic bishops. Given this responsibility to teach, it is important to make this correction for the record.”
Wuerl pointed out that the Catechism of the Catholic Church is clear, and has been clear for 2,000 years. He cited Catechism language that reads, “Human life must be respected and protected absolutely from the moment of conception … Since the first century the Church has affirmed the moral evil of every procured abortion. This teaching has not changed and remains unchangeable. Direct abortion, that is to say, abortion willed either as an end or a means, is gravely contrary to the moral law.”
A Pelosi spokesman did not immediately comment for this article.
The Speaker recently said she, unlike other Catholic politicians who support abortion rights, has not clashed with her church about receiving communion.
In an interview on C-SPAN that aired earlier this month, Pelosi was asked about how some church officials have raised objections about whether former presidential contenders – such as Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) and former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani (R) – should receive communion.
Pelosi, a Roman Catholic whose district includes most of San Francisco, said she has not encountered such difficulties in her church.
“I think some of it is regional,” she said, “It depends on the bishop of a certain region, and, fortunately for me, communion has not been withheld and I’m a regular communicant, so that would be a severe blow to me if that were the case.”

UPDATE
August 27, 2008
Cardinal Egan and the Abortion Debate
C. Edmund Wright
Did I just hear Cardinal Egan change the abortion debate? Perhaps I did.
Tuesday, the Archdioces of New York issued an unequivocally blistering rebuke to Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and her mind numbing attempt to keep the question of when life begins “above her pay grade” (not to mention the pay grades of Barack Obama , Cardinal Egan, the Pope and pretty much the entire Catholic Church.) Egan, perhaps fresh off a raise, is apparently of sufficient pay grade to answer this nagging question. And answer it he did, with clarity and certitude and with passion.
What he did not include in his answer, and this is the game changer, was scripture.
“We are blessed in the 21st century with crystal-clear photographs and action films of the living realities within their pregnant mothers. No one with the slightest measure of integrity or honor could fail to know what these marvelous beings manifestly, clearly and obviously are, as they smile and wave into the world outside the womb.”
[JR: WOW! Seems like the score is Princes 2 CINOs 0!]

Gertrude M. Healy
Gertrude M Healy, age 84, passed away peacefully Monday, August 25, 2008 at the Connecticut Hospice on the coast of Long Island Sound in Branford. Gertrude was born April 3, 1924, daughter of Walter Markey and Gertrude Marie (Shea) Markey.
Gertrude grew up on City Island, N.Y. and was always proud of the title "Clam Digger" given to the residents. A graduate of Villa Maria Academy in the Bronx, Gertrude attended Franklin School of Professional Arts and became a draftswoman for Jacobs Shipyard that built mine sweepers and PT boats. On August 22, 1944, she had the honor of christening the PT BOAT PT398.
Gertrude married William Healy, a Manhattan College graduate and Navy lieutenant. The couple moved to Danbury and raised two sons, William and Robert. After 30 years in her beloved Danbury community, Gertrude moved to Southbury and sought employment in areas of interest to her. Working at Calico Corners and the Lenox Store, she shared her passion for creating a beautiful home environment. Gertrude was an active volunteer throughout her life, volunteering at the Danbury Court House, the election polls, Welcome Wagon, the Southbury Training School Thrift Shop, and Pegasus, a therapeutic horseback riding stable for handicapped children in Woodbury.
Gertrude became known as "Gigi" (short for Grandma Gertrude) when her first granddaughter was born 25 years ago. "Gigi" was devoted to her granddaughters and would come to their aide at a moment's notice. Always resourceful and efficient, she often enjoyed the challenge of redesigning a dress or a slip cover! Gertrude passed on her love of the shore and saw to it that her family enjoyed vacation by the sea for decades.
Gertrude's friends at Heritage Village fondly remember her as one who always anticipated the needs of others right through to the end, whether it was potting flowers for the units or running errands, she attended to the smallest of needs for others. An active member of her church, Gertrude possessed a firm faith in God's goodness which she reflected to all.
Gertrude is survived by two sons, William and his wife, Suzanne of Bethel and Robert of Southbury; one brother, Walter Markey of Chester, N.J.; and her beloved grandchildren, Robyn, Anna, Heather, Melissa and Christy Rose. There will be no calling hours. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday, August 28, 2008 at St. Teresa Church, Woodbury at 10:30 a.m. Following a reception, committal services will take place in St. Mary Cemetery, Bethel. Memorial contributions are requested to be made to the Connecticut Hospice, 100 Double Beach Road, Branford, CT 06405-4906. The Green Funeral Home, 57 Main Street, Danbury is in charge of arrangements.

I understand a lot of alumni, families of students and others interested in what is going on at Manhattan College have wondered what has happened to the online version of the Quadrangle.
Well we went offline all of last year to concentrate on the print issue of the newspaper. As a result, I am pleased to announce we recently won the Most Improved Group Award for the 2007-2008 school year.
We are extremely excited to bring back the online version.

ENDNOTE: Let’s NOT forget the workers on ‘Labor Day’!
Last night, I heard three waitresses in a ‘greasy spoon’ commiserate that they only earned 2.63 per hour with no holiday or overtime pay. Not being annoying, while I am never an advocate for gooferment action, in this case I was.
I want to urge the gooferment to get out of its improper and unconstitutional role in education. Clearly these women had been miseduacter in their rights in the free market. I wanted to stand up and scream ‘qwit yur kvetching and get a better job!’ at the top of my lungs.
I appreciated these women serving Frau and I. (You might ask why I was in a greasy spoon, but that a matter for another day!) But, I’m saddened that America’s “Labor” is so under educated!

To one and all: This is to announce the opening of my new online store at www.cafepress.com/newbreen. You can now buy t-shirts featuring some of my classic political cartoons from yesterday and today! The “Clintstones”, Nixon (my all-time favorite), 2 of my most popular Obama cartoons, McCain and “Mahmoud the Madman” Ahmadinejad are featured.
The prices range from just $15.99 to $18.99. (That’s less than TV’s “magic price”!) Of course, you can also get there from the home page of my website, at www.newbreen.com or www.jerrybreen.com. Check it out!
Let me know what you think. We’ll be offering more designs in the future. If all goes well, it will be upgraded over time. Thanks again for your interest.
Sincerely,

From: Bill Masters [MC1962]

To: Fjohn68 Reinke
Subject: Manhattan Alum Directory
John:
As you have frequently reported, the College’s Alumi Staff has done a poor job of updating their record base. Now, we get postcards to call and update our info. I called, hoping that it might really be improving, answered the questions and then heard a sales pitch to purchase an Alumni Directory for a ridiculous price. Then, 3 days later, got another call with a pitch to sell me again. I think the Alum staff has really gone sleazy since Joe left. The staff has taken the easy way, farmed out the work and this reeks of the old “Who’s Who in Colleges and Universities” scam to sell books.
Bill Hildea ‘62S
[JR: It was the same with the last Green Alumni Directory. I'm not sure that "sleazy" is the right word. Us injineers aint good with dem big wurds like you science guys; I'd call it "stingy". The two directories that I remember were BOTH absurdly priced! The last one did bring in and introduced the online directory. I often kick myself for not putting up an equivalent, but it would have cost real money. I run this on a zero budget. I find it hard to envision that a college -- with Engineering, Math, and CompSci -- based on an excellent network infrastructure (I had a hand in specifying it!) -- couldn't put up an equivalent "online database" for next to nothing. But, what do I know. I do know in at least TWO cases, the lousy treatment of two alums has made them adamant about not being "developed". Sigh, makes me crazy.]

A long comment by fhohn68
I’m sad. I knew him as “Moose”. That was before he found love. His Irish Bride, who he was crazy about, wanted him to be called “William”. Guess it was more dignified!
I remember his gentle touch with children. He was one of those MC BBall Crazies. Through my cousin after a game one time, we were at one of their local haunts for a post-game repast. I don’t even remember the score. But I think MC lost. Moose was very positive about how well the team played, how well they were doing, and how good things were going to be. I though he’d drunk the same KoolAid as the rest on the Crazies. But that was how I remember him – very positive.
Any way we sat down for, I think it was late lunch or early dinner. Moose had me on one side and my cousin’s two grandchildren next to him. Moose was a child at heart. He was having a great conversation with the young boy about what ever was important to the child. I remember thinking how he’d be good at my current job where the Leadership had the attention span, and logical train of thought, of small children.
Came time for the food to be served, and some one suggested Grace. Like the good man he was, he took off his hat and bowed his head. The boy exclaimed “Uncle Moose, what happened to your hair?” In the silence for the prayer, it echoed through the restaurant.
Moose was folicly challenged. He had a rug under his hat. Later, I heard he thought it made him look younger and more attractive to the ladies. It had come off when he pulled the cap off.
Moose was a sport and a trooper. “Nothing. Why?” he replied with a straight face. “It’s gone?” the young boy exclaimed with saucer like eyes and an excited tone. “Well, who could have took it? Will you help me look for it?” “Sure, Uncle Moose, but I didn’t see anyone take it.”
Moose gave the boy a big hug. And, his slightly older big sister whispered in the boy’s ear. Explaining the facts of life to him like all big sisters do. The boy was upset and said to Moose: “It’s OK, uncle moose, you look good this way.”
Needless to say the table of extended family of Crazies was besides themselves. Moose seemed to enjoy the mirthful attention and just smiled and laughed along with the rest. Later, I complimented him on the way he handled it. He just said: “It was easy. I just love kids.” I saw him a few times after that. And, always admired the humble man who just loved kids.
I know somewhere in Heaven there’s a gentle man loving all the children. And since Heaven is perfection, maybe he’ll have found who stole his hair.
Dona Nobis Pacem, Moose.

ADDED COMMENT FROM FJOHN68
Upon reflection, Mike made me think. Always bad for an old illiterate injineer!
I wish more people would capture “their song” about these good folks.
But not just that one aspect, or story. If the inet gives us one benefit, it’s the ability to capture all these “songs” for posterity. Virtually cost free; other than the effort to get the bits on a screen.
Doing the OBITS for Jasper Jottings has taught me at least one thing, it’s the sad to think of all the human discoveries, understandings, ‘facts’, and learnings that have been lost because they weren’t captured, or people died before their “songs” were captured. Guess that’s why I’m driven to capture these”songs”. I always think of the Firefox series of books where some college kids captured the wisdom of the last generation of West Virginia hill people pioneers. What a heroic “save”!
What every you think of Stephen Covey, the self help guru, I did learn from him that the derivation of the word ‘universe’ is ‘one song’. And, Covey can sell you on the idea that the songs of humanity are all intertwined.
So I want to capture them ALL before they are lost forever.
Deaths like Moose, and all the other great Jaspers, hammer home the message “as the sands of time slip thru the hourglass, so do the Days of Our Lives”. Yeah, it’s Frau Reinke’s favorite soap. But it’s also true.
So, sit down and write something for Jasper Jottings!
I’ll send your “contributor’s card”, if you do!

JObit: Casey, Br. Daniel F. (MC1964)
http://www.legacy.com/Providence/Obituaries.asp?
Page=LifeStory&PersonId=114632080
Daniel F. Casey
CASEY, BROTHER DANIEL F., F.S.C., died peacefully on Wednesday, July 30th, at the Saint Antoine Residence in North Smithfield, RI.
Brother Daniel was 74 years old and just short of his 56th anniversary as a Brother of the Christian Schools.
Brother Daniel was born to John F. and Mary Casey on June 2,1934 in Providence, RI.
His education began in Providence at the Cleary School and continued at St. Raphael’s Academy in Pawtucket. His formal education then extended to Catholic University of America (Washington, DC: A.B. in the Classics, 1957); Manhattan College (New York City: M.A. in the Classics, 1964; M.A. in Theology, 1969); Boston College (Newton, MA: Certificate of Advanced Graduate Studies).
He travelled from being the fifth grade teacher at Good Shepherd School in the Bronx section of New York City to being the President/Vice-Chancellor of Bethlehem University in the Palestinian section of Israel.
Brother’s most noteworthy and direct contributions to the Diocese of Providence started when he became the principal of St. Raphael’s in 1976. He served four years in that position; and, after a six year term as a principal in the Brooklyn Diocese, he returned to Providence as an educational consultant to the diocese.
Brother Daniel became the Superintendent of Schools for the Diocese of Providence in 1986, and he continued in this position until 1996.
In 1996, Daniel took up residence at Christian Brothers’ Center in Narragansett, RI, and became the auxiliary provincial of the Brothers of the Christian Schools of the Long Island-New England Province. Four years later, Daniel became the provincial.
After his four-year term as provincial, Daniel left Providence and left the United States, resuming his missionary career, this time as the President/Vice-Chancellor of Bethlehem University. Bethlehem University was founded by Pope Paul VI and entrusted to the Brothers of the Christian Schools to meet the higher educational needs of the Arab community, both Catholic and Muslim.
Brother Daniel was the President/Vice-Chancellor of Bethlehem University from 2005 until, dealing with the fact of his illness, he wrote to the Superior General of the Brothers of the Christian Schools and tendered his resignation in March of this year.
In that letter of resignation, Brother Daniel aligned himself completely with the spirit of the Founder of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, St. John Baptist De La Salle, when he used the Founder’s words to depict his attitude of holy resignation: ‘I adore in all things the will of God in my regard.’
Daniel entered the Brothers of the Christian Schools in Barrytown, New York, in September of 1952, and pronounced his first vows there. After the usual period of temporary vows, Brother Daniel made his final vows in August of 1959.
Upon graduation from Catholic University and after his one-year stay at Good Shepherd School, Daniel moved on, from 1958 to 1964, to Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School (Brooklyn, NY) and St. Mary’s High School (Waltham, MA), teaching Latin.
In July of 1964, Brother Daniel began a long and varied career as a school administrator. He became the principal of St. Mary’s.
After a year for graduate studies at Manhattan College, Brother Daniel began another part of his career; this time as a missionary. He was assigned as a teacher to St. Joseph School in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. In 1971, he became the headmaster of the school and, simultaneously, the auxiliary provincial for that area.
Brother Daniel spent the 1975 school year pursuing post-masters studies at Boston College. He then returned to his alma mater, St. Raphael’s Academy, as teacher, then as principal.
From 1980 until 1986, he served as principal of Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School. At the end of his second term as principal, he returned to Providence as an educational consultant and became the Superintendent of Schools for the Diocese of Providence, a position he held from 1987 to 1996.
In 1996, he began a period of direct service to the Brothers themselves when he was named auxiliary provincial for the Brothers of the Long Island – New England Province. Subsequently, Daniel was elected provincial of the Long Island-New England Province.
In addition to the Brothers of the Christian Schools, Daniel is mourned and survived by his sister Barbara Casey; his two brothers: Edward and John. Daniel was predeceased by his brothers Robert and Richard.
Brother Daniel’s wake is being held at Christian Brothers’ Center, 635 Ocean Road, Narragansett, RI on Sunday, August 3rd from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m.
Brother’s Mass of Christian Resurrection will be Monday August 4th at 10 AM at Providence’s Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul, 30 Fenner Street, Providence, RI. Burial will follow at Christian Brothers’ Cemetery, 635 Ocean Road, Narragansett, RI.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Brother Daniel’s memory may be made to the Brothers of the Christian Schools, 635 Ocean Road, Narragansett, RI. For directions and online guestbook, averystortifuneralhome.com

[JR: Brother Daniel must have been at Good Shepherd when I was there. I was pretty much in the daze of youth because I don't remember him. Or any of the other Brothers; other than they were very scary people. But, that's Ok, he probably wouldn't have remembered me, unless I hit him with one of my favorite occupations -- paper airplanes. I blended in! Rest faithful fellow alum. This life's work is done.]

JOY: Fife, William (MC1967) makes it to 40!
Bill and Pattie Fife will celebrate their 40th Wedding Anniversary on August 24th.

fjohn68’s comment:
Unfortunately, I’ll be at a wedding. A prior commitment; made months ago. (All the “nieces” and “nephews” know to invite Frau Reinke early to shindigs; she writes checks with zeros. I, on the other hand, would offer a shiny new dime. Or an autographed copy of my blog book. 40$ at Lulu. I actually sold three; guess some folks needed door stoppers!)
Any way, if you run into “Fife and Wife” as they were known in the glory days”, giv’em a hug and ask about their “bucket list”.
Bill was my bridge partner in school. (the card game; not structures! Did you forget who was writing this?) We were good together. I was a stodgie straight ‘n’ narrow old bidder and he was the “italian” on our team. (”italian” was bridge pejorative for the Italian National Bridge Team, who used a strong 1 club convention. They were known for their flights of fancy; where bids had no relation to reality.) Like the time, in the Open Nationals at the NYC Hiton, he bids Six Spades and the two old biddies, who have the Ace AND King of Spades with FOUR Spades each, don’t double and wind up in a nose2nose yelling match with each other about who should have doubled. Hey, Bill had five little ones; I had none. Anyway, Bill tries to make peace between the two old broads and gets a tongue lashing about his wildness. I just shook my head and shut up. I had NO idea what was going on. But Bill was in his glory. We had an undisputed top on that one. Everyone wanted to know how we did it. I just pointed them towards Bill for his explanation.
I bet, if you ask him, he can still explain that hand.
Mazel Tov, Fife and Wife! Forty more? That’s a long list of 2dos you have.

Chuck Johnson, former WHLI DJ and politico, dead at 80
BY MICHELINE MARONI
August 1, 2008
*** begin quote ***
Love blossomed at Hempstead radio station WHLI the day news writer and announcer Chuck Johnson, then 30 years old, met music librarian Judy Ricci, then 20.
They married in 1958 after 10 months of dating. And they were just four months shy of celebrating their 50th anniversary when he died, at age 80, of congestive heart failure Sunday at his Bethpage home surrounded by his family.
“Everybody who knew Chuck got to experience the phenomenal man he was,” said his wife, Judy Johnson.
Charles D. Johnson was born in Larchmont on Feb. 20, 1928. He attended Fordham University before earning a bachelor’s degree in broadcasting from Manhattan College in 1949.
After serving in the U.S. Army, working in the intelligence division, Chuck Johnson combined his degree and love of entertaining and landed jobs in radio.
Johnson captured listeners by impersonating famous people like Jimmy Stewart, Clark Gable and the Kennedy brothers, Ted and John, said his son, Matthew Johnson of Bethpage.
He was also a gifted writer and poet. After JFK’s assassination, Johnson shared a story he wrote about the late president on the air, said Judy Johnson. And that rerouted him into the world of politics because it caught the ear of then-Nassau County Democratic Party chairman Jack English. Johnson started as a public relations person in 1960 for the Town of Oyster Bay’s then-Supervisor Michael Petito.
He retired in 1998 as deputy supervisor for Oyster Bay Town serving under then-Supervisor Lewis Yevoli.
The Johnsons’ neighbor of 25 years and fellow Democrat Angela Mellody said she used to love discussing politics with him. “Chuck was always a delight,” Mellody said. “He had great stories.”
Although Johnson was an important man at work, relatives said he was equally as important at home. Judy Johnson remembered her husband changing diapers, taking the two boys to sporting events and chauffeuring their two daughters.
“He would do anything for you,” Matthew Johnson said.
Chuck Johnson was also the president of the Little Midget football team in Bethpage, known as the Bethpage Panthers, and was an avid bowler, said Matthew Johnson.
Most of all, his son said, he looked forward to watching reruns of “The Honeymooners” with his father and going for weekend breakfasts together.
Besides his wife and son Matthew, he is survived by daughter Vickie Knauf of Orlando, Fla., son Christopher Johnson of Patchogue, daughter Jen Farahat of Lynbrook and four grandchildren.
After today’s 11 a.m. service at Arthur F. White Funeral Home in Bethpage, he will be buried with military honors at Calverton National Cemetery in Calverton.

JAMES AND LORI CORLESS
James and Lori Corless
At the suggestion of their new boat captain, Jim and Lori Corless made their first trip to Montauk on their new “Hatteras Sportfisherman” in the summer of 1985 and fell in love with Montauk. Avid fishermen, they moved their boat from Connecticut to Montauk that same year.
For the first few years, they spent summer weekends in Montauk, living on their boat at the Montauk Yacht Club, and continuing to fish here. They won the first annual Mako Mania Tournament presented by the Star Island Yacht Club.
In the early 1990’s they bought their first apartment at the Montauk Manor overlooking Fort Pond Bay. It was then that they first became aware of the derelict Montauk Playhouse at the bottom of the hill. When the Town of East Hampton took over the building and there was talk of a Community Center, the Corless’s recognized the improvement to the quality of life this facility would have for the people of Montauk and have supported the efforts to finish the project ever since. They now spend most of their time in Montauk, and also at their home in Westchester.
James Corless attended the US Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point and earned an Electrical Engineering degree at Manhattan College. He is the founder and CEO of DMSI, a Developer and Manufacturer of Communications Systems in Norwalk, CT. In the 1980’s, under his direction, he saw the automation of many of the major Telephone Company’s Switching Systems in the USA. Since the 1990’s, his company has upgraded many Communication Systems of the US Navy and US Coast Guard worldwide.
Lori Corless was born and educated in Germany. In the 1970’s and 80’s she was the VP and Business Manager of STS-the TV Spot Sales Division of Storer Broadccasting Co. in NYC. In 1988, Lori joined DMSI as their VP and Business Manager.

Injury spoils Jotanovic’s dream
By Julie Ganz o The Journal News o August 2, 2008
***Begin Quote***
Having thrown a personal-best 19.89 meters at the Serbian Cup competition on July 5, 24-year-old shot putter Milan Jotanovic was excited to have earned the chance to compete in the 2008 Summer Olympics.
“It’s really nice to know when things like that happen that all your hard work is paying off,” said Jotanovic, a fifth-year senior finance major at Manhattan College.
Yet Jotanovic will be unable to compete Aug. 15 because he reinjured his right quadriceps while working out July 23. Since qualifying, he had been focusing entirely on the Olympics.
“It’s really maddening,” said Jotanovic, who went to the Olympic team doctor after experiencing a sharp pain that ran from his hip to his knee. “I was so excited (to go).”

“It’s kind of hard to accept this, but in some way, I can enjoy being with my family for a little longer time,” Jotanovic said.

Subject: NEW Jasper Alumni Directory
I received a call this past Sunday from the firm, Publishing Concepts, LP, to verify my information for the New Directory. Two things:
1) they asked to verify my email address. They asked if my @alum.manhattan.edu address was my address was still the one I wanted registered in the book. I said yes, even though I have changed e-mail providers and don’t get any mail sent to that address anymore. I’m hoping that HQ will correct this down the line but I’m not hopeful. The person collecting the information was pleasant but did not have much knowledge of whether or not there would be an online community. which brings me to;
2) the first package offered to me for my own copy of the directory was $500. and included nice things like a Manhattan coffee mug and a “high quality” ballpoint pen! anyway, I waited for the price of the book alone, two easy payments of $59. $118! I told them no and will wait for it to come out in paperback ; )
Keep up the good work John!

Ceasare was in the Class of 1959. The 1999 alumni directory say “BA” but that I believe is incorrect, as Cesare was a Civil Engineer his whole career. I also worked with him in both the NYS DPW and the reorganized state department into the DOT. Cesare was one year ahead of me at Manhattan.

ENDNOTE: the State costs us in ways we can see and ways we cannot see
http://www.lewrockwell.com/rockwell/tax-dollars-at-work.html
Your Tax Dollars at Work
by Llewellyn H. Rockwell, Jr.
*** begin quote ***
Frédéric Bastiat famously observed that the State costs us in ways we can see and ways we cannot see. Economists tend to focus on the second type because they elude public perceptions. What inventions are we denied because of regulations? What might have been done with the resources that are diverted in taxes or higher prices due to protectionism? The answers demonstrate that, because of intervention, we are worse off than we know.
*** AND ***
Take a picture of dead soldier, or the child of a killed Iraqi family, broadcast it on your blog, and what happens? Photo journalist Zoriah Miller has found out. He was kicked out of his “embed,” which is the name for the pack of journalists permitted to travel with a group of soldiers and report what those in command want reported. Afterwards, he was prohibited from traveling in any Marine-patrolled area of Iraq. The military command worked to get him kicked out of the country altogether.
*** AND ***
The truth is that the State must hide not only its wars but all of its activities. It hides its inflation. It hides the effects of its taxation and its protectionism. It fears anyone who draws the cause-and-effect connection between its activities and their deleterious consequences for the rest of us. It is the most destructive force in our world. Because that truth is so momentous, the State does everything possible to hide the smallest drop of blood.
The State wants us to all go on with our lives, believing it, loving it, and seeing only the pictures it wants us to see.

[JR: Sigh, we talked about "social justice", but funny how it only means "more gooferment". Your gooferment belies your concern with "social justice". It ain't mine! If it was, I'd be the benevolent dictator and put it out of its misery. I've come to be an anarchist. Only gooferments blunder about killing people. Our solutions have to be about keeping them broke and underfunded. Interesting that the USA post-1860 needed more and more money to wage more and more wars. Tax evasion is a virtue. Not to the extent that the "blue light gang" comes and takes you away or kills you, but to the extent that you deny them the funds they need to kill people. That sounds like the start of "social justice". imho!]
