Subject: Greetings from an Ethopian ’67 Jasper
Dear John,
Thank you for the recent birthday greetings you sent me (73 and counting). It was very thoughtful of you and much appreciated. I also appreciate your having been a sponsor for one of my Addis Hope kids and hope you are in a position to do so again. Just for your information, I’m attaching something relating to what’s been happening with me this past year.
Fraternally,
Brother Greg Flynn

ATTACHMENT:
For me the year 2007 was one of some unpleasant surprises and many grace-filled moments. I returned to the States in September for my usual Addis Hope fund-raising activities and for a medical follow-up to the ocular shingles that I experienced in my right eye in May. Much to my surprise, it was discovered that the shingles was the result of low grade non-Hodgkins lymphoma behind my left eye, back of the tongue and lower back. So instead of a planned return to Ethiopia in November, I underwent six cycles of chemotherapy at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in NYC, where my sister Kathleen works. She was able to arrange biopsies and chemo scheduling that made the ordeal so much easier. The grace-filled moments were witnessing the heroism -that’s the only way I can describe it- of the cancer-ridden patients I met and the loving care with which we were all treated by the hospital medical personnel. The long and short of it is that through the chemo and I was given a clean bill of health to return to Ethiopia with the stipulation that I return every six months for two years as follow-up. Special thanks to the Flynn/Maher clan and the CBA, Lincroft community who provided me extended hospitality and kept me in prayer.
I arrived back in Addis Ababa on the evening of September 9th 2008 to a very warm reception by the other member of my community, Brother Kassu Fantaye, and my Addis Hope lasallian Associate colleague, Ruth Girmay. The first inkling of a return to the Fourth World was being approached in the airport parking lot on this late cold and rainy evening by a bedraggled young mother and her two children looking for a few coins for food.
It is for such families that the Addis Hope program for kindergarten age children of street families was officially begun seven years ago. Ruth, has seen to it that after two years in the program more than 300 children who have graduated have been able to successfully compete for the limited number of places in Grade One in government schools. By the way, the latest graduation of 102 children took place on September 28, 2008. Over the years it has been the generosity of family, friends and benefactors that have enabled these children and their care-givers to have a new lease on life through education. More info can be found on our web site (www.addis-hope.com)
It comes as no surprise that the world financial crisis has impacted severely on countries like Ethiopia, which on the United Nations Human Development Index ranks 169 out of 177. In our case, the cost of the grain teff which makes up the daily hot meal we serve the Addis Hope children has risen from 100 Ethiopian dollars for 100 pounds to 1,200 dollars for the same amount. We also had to close one of our three centers due to the substantial increase in rent. This necessitated laying off two teachers, a cook and a guard and reducing the salaries of the staff. The 80 children who normally would be attending classes in that center will have to do without. To save rent cost, we also moved the Selihome Teacher Training program into one of the two remaining centers.
It is with the realization that most of the generous Friends of Addis Hope have also been affected by the financial crisis in one way or another that I still ask for your continued support. Without it the Addis Hope program would have to either close or be drastically reduced beyond what has already been done.

Travel Back to the 60s with Barry Drake
10/13/2008 -
An annual event in Penn State York’s free Cultural and Performing Artists series, Barry Drake, rock historian, returns to campus on Oct. 23 for his multimedia presentation “60s Rock: When the Music Mattered.” Travel back to the 60s at 7 p.m. in the Community Room of the Joe and Rosie Ruhl Student Community Center. This free program, sponsored by the campus and the York Newspaper Company, is open to the public.
The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, The Supremes, the Beach Boys, Simon & Garfunkel, the Rolling Stones, Otis Redding, and yes, even The Monkees, were the sounds filling the airwaves through those turbulent years. The decade of the 60s was one of the most interesting periods in American history and through all of the good and bad times, it was the music that brought us together and sometimes tore us apart. The political turmoil, the social upheaval, the hippie movement, the Vietnam War and the generation gap were all reflected in the popular music of the day. “60s Rock – When The Music Mattered” will celebrate, examine, clarify and put into perspective one of the most exciting decades in music history.
Drake, often called a walking encyclopedia of rock & roll, is a graduate of Manhattan College and has been involved in the world of music since buying his first rock & roll record in 1954. He grew up in New York City and saw everyone from Buddy Holly and Chuck Berry at the Brooklyn Paramount in 1957, to Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin at the Filmore in 1967. In 1965, Drake became a performer and songwriter and in 1970 was signed to Capitol Records. Since then, Drake has recorded three albums and has extensively toured the United States and Europe.
In 1984 Drake added rock & roll lectures to an already busy concert schedule. His lectures have become the most popular shows on college campuses. Drake is the five-time winner of the Campus Lecturer of the Year Award by The National Association for Campus Activities and the three-time winner of the Campus Lecturer of the Year Award by Campus Activities Magazine.
Drake combines his extensive knowledge of music and abilities as a dynamic entertainer in his multimedia presentation. Get ready to discover or rediscover the 60s with Drake at Penn State York. For more information on Drake visit his Web site at http://www.barrydrake.com/ . Check out http://www.pullocenter.psu.edu/ for more information on the variety of free and ticketed programs at Penn State York.

Liberal Catholic Bigotry Against Sarah Palin
By Joseph D’Hippolito
*** begin quote ***
The Catholic Left, which ostensibly advocates compassion and justice in the name of Jesus Christ, does not like Sarah Palin, and finds fault with her unwed 17-year-old daughter’s pregnancy, and even accuses her of apostasy.
Catholic Left notables Michael Sean Winters and Garry Wills are part of a campaign to destroy Palin. The Catholic Left wants to provide pseudo-theological cover for Catholic liberals who wish to vote for the Democratic ticket of Illinois Sen. Barack Obama and Delaware Sen. Joseph Biden. Obama supports legalized abortion while Biden, a Catholic, opposes the Magisterium’s teaching on abortion.
*** end quote ***
I can’t understand why, if the Church leaders won’t hold CINO politicians to account, the laity doesn’t. I just don’t understand! We say there’s a “right to life”, but we don’t vote that way. We purport to be followers. Some better than others. I’m not throwing any stones. But, on fundamental truths, where some one purports to be a Christian and votes for abortion, I think that a little attention is warranted. And, maybe, if not a “first stone”, then a gentle nudge up side the head, asking “what are you thinking?”.
So Palin gets denigrated, and Biden gets a pass?
So what are you thinking, and how will you vote. Feel free to answer silently. I really don’t want to know. It might make me even sadder.

‘SNL’ sends up VP debate with Fey, Queen Latifah

By JAKE COYLE, AP Entertainment Writer 2 hours, 28 minutes ago

*** begin quote ***

NEW YORK – It’s starting to feel like Tina Fey is running for vice president.

Fey again returned to “Saturday Night Live” to play Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin as the sketch comedy show continued to pull out all the stops in its election year season. Queen Latifah dropped by to portray Thursday’s debate moderator, PBS’s Gwen Ifill, and cast member Jason Sudeikis stepped into the role of Democratic vice presidential candidate Joe Biden.

*** end quote ***

One hopes that everyone can look at this and laugh. Heaven help us if we become so sensitive that we can’t. I always try to look at my affectations, my priorities, and the things I think are important, like Jasper Jottings, and laugh at my own pomposity. (Is that a wurd?) Imagine an injineer seeking to report like a gazetteer on alumni stuff, connect his fellow alums with each other, lecture them on liberty, instruct them on Austrian economic, and make social commentary. Who does he think he is? Just a fellow alum, well aware of his limitations, trying to do a ‘job’ that seems worth doing to him.

My hope is this week, if you can’t laugh at SNL, if you can’t laugh at yourself, you can laugh at my pretensions. At least then, we’ll be sharing a laugh together. Because I laugh at myself a lot.

Is this fellow serious?

That’s left to the reader to answer. Hopefully this gave your week a funny start.

Dear F. John,

I have heard John Dear speak on a number of occasions and he is quite inspiring. Whether or not you agree with his pacifist ideals, his words and his actions are a challenge to all of us to consider how Jesus asks us to live. Fr. John is the real deal, having put his own life and freedom on the line a number of times to live out his beliefs. I would heartily recommend his talk to any who are able to attend.

John C. Donahue Jr.

NORTHFIELD – John C. Donahue Jr., 88, died Saturday, Oct. 4, 2008, of cancer, at home.

He was born July 24, 1920, in Lynn, Mass., the son of Kathleen (Martin) Donahue and John C. Donahue Sr.

He was a longtime newspaperman whose career spanned 75 years from 1933 to 2008, including as editor and publisher of The Northfield News and Transcript, which he sold in July. He had started The Northfield Transcript in retirement in 1999, and published it until 2001. In 2007 he bought the 129-year-old Northfield News and combined it with the revived Transcript.

At the age of 12, Mr. Donahue and his cousin, the late Thomas A. Donahue, established the (Northfield) Falls News, a summer weekly that continued for five years. He worked his way through high school and college on various newspapers.

He had worked for Bostonian magazine, the Boston Transcript, United Press, the Burlington Daily News, Vermont Sunday News, The Washington Post, the (Braintree, Mass.) Sunday Forum, the Boston Evening Globe, Suburban Trends in Butler, N.J., and the Daily Record of Morristown, N.J.

Mr. Donahue taught journalism at Purdue University, West Lafayette, Ind., and served as publisher of the student daily, the Purdue Exponent.

He retired in 1992 and returned to Northfield.

He was a U.S. Coast Guard veteran of World War II.

JFound: Martin, Margaret (MC1998)

One of our fellow Jaspers – Martin, Margaret (MC1998) – has posted this.

She hasn’t asked for our support, so this is NOT an advertisement. Having followed the “Caring Bridge” site for both her daughter and her cousin (I think?), this activity is well worth supporting. There is something about sick children that tugs at the heartstrings. I have no use for a cookbook, OTOH I could use the “Caitlin Diet Book”! Although tactically getting sick might take off a few pounds, I doubt that’s a good long term strategy. I’ll buy a book just to express support for them. You might consider doing the same. I look forward to reporting soon that Caitlin and James are home and well. For this I humbly pray.

JHQ: Manhattan College To Host Three-Day Visit By Mexican Coffee Farmer As Part Of Fair Trade Month

http://www.manhattan.edu/news/news_releases/100608_1.shtml

October 6, 2008

Manhattan College To Host Three-Day Visit By Mexican Coffee Farmer As Part Of Fair Trade Month

RIVERDALE, N.Y. – Manhattan College’s office of campus ministry and social action (CMSA) and the student group JustPeace will host a coffee farmer from Mexico in the Bronx and on campus from Oct. 8-10. This is possible due to a small grant from Catholic Relief Services (CRS) to promote fair trade.

Rigoberto Contreras Diaz’s visit to the Bronx will begin on Wednesday evening, Oct. 8, with a meeting at Our Lady of Refuge Parish, where he will address a largely Spanish speaking community about his work and the value of fair trade coffee to this family and community. As part of the meeting, fair trade coffee will be served and a free sample of the company’s chocolate will be distributed along with brochures on fair trade handcrafts from around the world.

On Thursday, Oct. 9, Diaz will visit Spanish classes on the Manhattan College campus and is scheduled to speak (in Spanish with translation) in the Alumni Room of O’Malley Library at 4:30 p.m. Coffee and chocolates will again be served during the event, which is free and open to the public.

Last spring, Manhattan students involved in the social justice club JustPeace received a Fair Trade Market Building grant from CRS. The grant will help the students who work closely with CMSA to raise awareness throughout October (Fair Trade Month), as well as sponsor a symposium for local Catholic colleges in the spring.

The Fair Trade Federation is the trade association that strengthens and promotes North American organizations fully committed to fair trade. The federation is part of the global fair trade movement, which builds equitable and sustainable trading partnerships and creates opportunities to alleviate poverty.

CRS is the official international humanitarian agency of the U.S. Catholic community. Its mission is to alleviate suffering and provide assistance to needy people in more than 100 countries, without regard to race, religion or nationality.

For more information, please contact Lois Harr, director of CMSA, at (718) 862-7142 or e-mail lois.harr@manhattan.edu.

Queer Town: The Life and Spirit of Genevieve Florence Range

by Patrick Range McDonald

October 7, 2008 8:00 AM

*** begin quote ***

On Monday morning, a day after her oldest daughter celebrated her seventieth birthday, Genevieve Florence Range passed away at the age of 95 in New Jersey. She was my grandmother, friend, and one of the major influences in my life.

Grandma, as her eight grandkids called her, was everything you wanted in a grandmother. She was, among many other things, always loving, always smiling, and always supportive. When I came out of the closet several years ago, I was living in Los Angeles, far away from my family who live in Spring Lake, New Jersey. So my mother sat down Grandma to tell her the news. She was 88 at the time, and Mom was a little nervous about what she would think.

{Article Continues}

Gen eventually graduated from St. Augustine Grammar School and then made it through two years of high school. By junior year at Roosevelt High, her oldest brother, Bill, told her it was time to get a job. So she found work at Western Union in Manhattan. Gen later worked as a secretary at Mount Saint Vincent College and Manhattan College. Her last job was as an executive secretary at Columbia University, where she retired at the age of 65.

{Article Continues}

Genevieve Range was a fun gal from The Bronx, and she always said she lived a good life. I’ll miss her, but I also have enduring memories of my grandmother, and all of them, in bright Technicolor, make me smile or laugh out loud. It’s probably the best gift any grandma can give a grandchild. Thank you.

Regardless of degree status, does Manhattan have an interesting impact on people OR does it attract those interesting people to it? Tonight, I'll say prayer for a secretary who spent some time at MC. I hope you will too. RIP Ms. Genevieve. Wish you had retired from MC!]

MNews: MC Lacrosse plays for charity

http://www.dowling.edu/athletics/News-081005mlax.asp

WISHMAKER 2008 TO BE HELD SUNDAY, OCTOBER 19TH

Brookhaven, NY- The Dowling College Lacrosse team and Dowling College Athletics will play host to the 1st annual Wishmaker Fall Classic Tournament at Golden Lions Field on Sunday, October 19th.

Thanks to the participating schools of the tournament, Dowling College, Manhattan College, C.W. Post, and Sacred Heart University, all proceeds from the event will go to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

The Division II Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) has a longstanding commitment to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, an organization that grants the heartfelt wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions. The student-athlete group has raised almost $500,000 since the launch of its fundraising initiative for the charity, with the most recent efforts marking the largest amount raised by the group in any single academic year.

“We’re very excited about this event as this is a very important initiative to not only Dowling, but also Division II athletics as a whole.” said Men’s Lacrosse head coach and event organizer Tim Boyle. “We have a lot of great teams coming out this first year and we hope to gain even more momentum each following Fall Classic.”

50/50 raffles will be taking place as well as raffles for prizes donated by the various institutions and sponsors. In addition, a tailgating party will take place to the east of the main field all day. Come show your support and root on your favorite team for a good cause! This has the potential to be really cool: I might be going to the Dominican Republic in March! I’m on the board for L.O.V.E. (Lasallian Outreach Volunteer Experience), which is Manhattan College’s service trip program. At our last meeting, we decided to add two new trips, one to Galveston, TX during January and one to DR during spring break. I am unavailable during January (LONDON YAY, although if I wasn’t going to to London, I’d be in New Orleans, so I wasn’t going to Texas either way), so I said I’d be totally interested in DR. Also, I might be co-leading this trip. Jenn (our coordinator) said that since these trips are new, she’d prefer to have 2 leaders for each, and she’d prefer that the leaders this time around came from the board, since we are all trustworthy. Katie B. and DJ will probably lead the TX trip, but Emily, Dave, and I all said we want to do the DR, so who knows. Right now, nothing is confirmed, but I think I have a really good chance of getting to go if the trip does end up going ahead.

*** and ***

My mom thinks it’s really funny that of all the places I could be going to for a service trip, it could be the Dominican Republic. You see, her brother, my Uncle John, has been there

*** and ***

Uncle John went with this president and got to inspect the troops. Also this president declared it to be “John Geary Day.”( I have no idea which president of the Dominican Republic Uncle John was referring to, by the way). I’m not really sure how much of this is true. Uncle John is crazy in the usualy “my family is insane” sort of way.

By the way, the notion of “government charity” – mandatory – is patently ideological on its face (as in “The Ministry of Truth,” or “Down is Up.”) Yet my own Catholic Church national hierarchy and bureaucracy has drunk the Kool-Aid, and so it celebrates higher taxes and greater socialism in the name of the “common good” – and gets billions of taxpayer money, seized from us at the point of a gun, for its “charities.”

Frankly, I don’t think things will go very well at the Last Judgment if the only thing we can say on our own behalf is that we rendered unto Caesar.

Bold defiance in Nazi Paris By Barbara Mellor
Translator of Resistance: Memoirs of Occupied France
Notre Guerre, Souvenirs de Résistance, Agnès Humbert, 1946.
The listing on French eBay didn’t give much clue as to the treasure that lay in store.
Agnes Humbert’s secret journal was first published in 1946
*** begin quote ***
Neither title nor author meant anything to me. But a memoir of the French Resistance published so soon after the war and – most intriguingly – written by a woman, might be worth a couple of euros.
When it arrived, Notre Guerre – its evocative cream-coloured cover darkened with age, its blotting-paper pages roughly cut – exhaled the atmosphere of wartime Paris. There was no preamble, no introduction. As I started to read, I was plunged directly into the Parisians’ agonized anticipation of the arrival of the German army in their beloved city in June 1940.
*** end quote ***
[JR: We continue to learn what good people did to resist evil. Hopefully, our challenges, or at least mine, will be little ones. Franz Jägerstätter comes to mind. And, all the ones we don't know. When we are presented with evil, either personally or by our government, do we, as Jaspers, have huevos to stand up and "just say no"? It so much easier to "just go along to get along". Like the line from a "man for all seasons"?]
*** begin quote ***
The Duke of Norfolk: Oh confound all this. I’m not a scholar, I don’t know whether the marriage was lawful or not but dammit, Thomas, look at these names! Why can’t you do as I did and come with us, for fellowship!
Sir Thomas More: And when we die, and you are sent to heaven for doing your conscience, and I am sent to hell for not doing mine, will you come with me, for fellowship?

RE: Friend Request
Dear Fellow Jasper Alumni,
I am reaching out to you to add you to my collection of Jaspers on Facebook. Recently, a fellow Classmate of your year, Jack Cahill, joined at my urging. And, he was the first in your Class Year of 1964 that I had. I couldn’t suggest any peers to him.
Chagrined, I have set out to remedy that.
By way of explanation, I’m just a harmless old alum that runs an alumni ezine – a weekly email about Jasper findings – http://www.jasperjottings.com – It is a imho interesting weekly summary of alumni and (to a lesser extent) student news.
I do Jasper Jottings to connect Jaspers globally. I’ve been trying to drag the “real” MC Alumni organization into this decade. Any Jasper Jottings exists, it’s free, and is an excellent source to identify and connect with specific alumni. For example, I have about 1500 Jaspers reading it every week.
This is just my attempt to “help” you and Jack connect. :-) You might not even know you needed help. :-) It, Jasper Jottings, might help you possibly identify other alumni that you might want to connect with.
Jasper-ing-ly yours,
Now I have to adjust my tin foil hat, and go “help” others,

To one and all: The Presidential election is almost upon us, and it’s not too late to stock up on Obama or McCain shirts from the Jerry Breen boutique – that is, my online store at cafepress.com . Check out all of the colorful designs at http://www.cafepress.com/newbreen . Here’s my latest design – “Obama Rocks!” I was looking at the Obama campaign logo one day when I noticed that the flag stripes coming out of the blue “O” almost looked like a tongue coming out of a mouth – which reminded me of a popular logo for a certain “World’s Greatest Rock’n'Roll Band”. I think you’ll agree that nothing says “Obama Rocks!” better than this graphic. Of course, you can also check it out on my website at www.newbreen.com or www.jerrybreen.com , as usual. I’ll have more news in a week or two. Thanks, Jerry Breen

Speakers?
Hello, My name is Stephen and this is my first time posting in the community. I’m an Environmental Engineer at Manhattan College and an active member of NYWEA (New York Water Environment Association).
We’ve been given the opportunity to have several nights each semester for guest speakers to come to the school. In the past we’ve had people such as the deputy commissioner of the DEP, Alumni of the school who’ve gone o to work for consulting firms like Malcolm Pirnie and Hazen and Sawyer, and even lawyers who specialize in environmental issues.
My question to the community is this: Do you know of anyone else who would make a good speaker? We’re looking for people from the New York City area who aren’t too expensive. Anything to do with Green Construction, Alternative energy, or even just recycling on a small scale is fine.
If you have any recommendations, please let me know. Also, if you are from the Bronx or surrounding area most of these events are open to the public so you should check them out. Thanks!

{Extraneous Deleted}
Oliver Abel, 54, teaches finance at Manhattan College and owns Oliver’s Chocolates in Ridgewood. He watches Wall Street from the perspective of a former investment banker, and is appalled at the “greed and the lack of responsibility” shown by the leaders of Bear Stearns, Lehman Brothers and other crisis-ridden institutions.
“I’m concerned about the long-term effects,” Abel said. “I’m teaching college students who are demoralized by what’s going on. … They are trying to learn the correct way to run a business and all they are seeing is this tremendous greed and disregard for shareholder responsibility.”
He is disgusted that the banking industry has left the public to bail them out, he said. “The banks had one long, huge party, they got drunk, and we all have to clean it up,” Abel said.
“I feel very sorry for the retirees with fixed incomes,” he added. “They didn’t do anything wrong and now they are bearing the brunt from the party.”

ENDNOTE: Vatican starts to id CINO politicians?

Vatican official attacks U.S. Democrats as “party of death”

*** begin quote ***
Vatican officials seldom single out political leaders who differ with the Church on issues like abortion rights or embryonic stem cell research. But now that the Vatican’s highest court is led by an American, the former St. Louis Archbishop Raymond Burke, we can expect things to get more explicit in Vatican City – at least when when it comes to U.S. politics.
*** end quote ***
In the business world, protecting one’s brand is essential to preventing the consumer from wandering off out of cofusion. Guess Holy Mother Church has been too busy with pedophilia to notice that Catholic In Name Only politicians (CINOs) are leading the flocks astray. Nice to see that the “barn door” maybe getting locked long after the horse is so long gone. Maybe fifty years gone? Since the first CINO, JFK! They’ve lost generations here in the USA.
(We no longer deserve to call ourselves “The United States of America” any more. Since the “direct election of senators”, the States have been nothing more than extensions of the Federal Government. Sort of like a patient infected with a second form of cancer. Lysander Spooner was right about the Constitution with it’s “right to life”. And, while we are at it, let’s put the plastic bag of the Statue of Liberty or at least build a mile high fence around it. We should be embarrassed by it’s presence. A reminder of what a once great nation we were. I am ashamed of how far we have fallen from the Dead Old White Guy’s ideals.)
Respectfully submitted for your consideration, and action.

Comment on JNews: Arthur Doran Jr. to run for Yonkers mayor by Holly Tokarz
Arthur J. Doran is my grandfather. We all knew Doran was going to be a fantastic mayor. But with all family problems, it was just too much to handle. Arthur J. Doran is a great man. A the greatest grandfather a kid could ask for. I am 14 years old, and my grandfathers has taught me all of the great lessons in life. His love for New York is unbelievable. Doran is always in the mood to see something historical, whether it is 5 minutes away or 9 hours. Arthur J. Doran is a great man, who is a grandfather, to 10, and a father to 5. His Irish background effects him proudly. Yonkers would’ve been great if Arthur J. Doran was elected, and did not drop out. But, I believe things worked out for the best.
